Hunting
The hunting season in the Southern Alps runs from mid March to the end of August with the best months being April to June. The mountains surrounding Whare Kea offer excellent hunting grounds for wild red deer, chamois and Himalayan tahr. Smaller hunting grounds for duck, quail and Canadian geese are also an option. The hunting grounds are accessed via a helicopter charter from the front lawn of the Lodge. Local guides are essential and being winter, the weather can be cold and unpredictable. The cost for this activity varies depending on the trophies hunted. See www.minaretoutfitters.com or www.flyfishhunt.co.nz for further information about the local hunting conditions.

Siberia Experience
For those wishing to combine air, water and land in a unique activity, the Siberia experience is a fantastic good weather day trip throughout the remote high mountains of the Southern Alps. Starting the day with a drive to the north end of Lake Wanaka and the hamlet of Makarora (about 1 hour), you will then enjoy a scenic ½ hour flight through the Alps landing at the Siberia Valley airstrip. From there a 3 hour walk down stream through the beech forest will take you to the Wilkin River where you’ll be picked up by a jet boat for an exhilarating ½ hour ride back to your starting point. A more detailed description is available at www.siberiaexperience.co.nz, www.southernalpsair.co.nz or www.wilkinriverjets.co.nz.
