Water Activities

Whether it’s fishing, rafting, kayaking, sailing, boating or even canyoning, Whare Kea’s location on the edge of Lake Wanaka and close proximity to the surrounding mountain rivers makes it ideally located to enjoy these water based activities. Please talk to our staff who are ready to help organise these activities.

To ensure the following activities are all the more enjoyable we recommend you pack comfortable walking shoes/boots, fleece pullover/jumper, waterproof jacket, cap/hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent and please don’t forget your camera.

Siberia Experience

For guests wishing to combine air, water and land in a unique activity, the Siberia experience is a fantastic good weather day trip throughout the remote high mountains of the Southern Alps. Starting the day with a drive to the north end of Lake Wanaka and the hamlet of Makarora (about 1 hour), you will then enjoy a scenic ½ hour flight through the Alps landing at the Siberia Valley airstrip. From there a 3 hour walk down stream through the beech forest will take you to the Wilkin River where you’ll be picked up by a jet boat for an exhilarating ½ hour ride back to your starting point. A more detailed description is available at www.siberiaexperience.co.nz, www.southernalpsair.co.nz or www.wilkinriverjets.co.nz.

Fishing

Whare Kea is ideally located near the famous rivers, streams and lakes of Otago and Southland where fishing for either trout or salmon is a favourite past-time. The season runs from October through to May with the best months from October till March. Local guides are necessary and remote locations require the use of the helicopter. Rafting and Kayaking

Experience rafting or kayaking on New Zealand’s largest river, the Clutha. A short drive from Whare Kea along the West Coast Highway is the Albert Town Bridge where you can join the 3 hour eco-rafting or kayaking tour downstream to the “Red” Bridge (rafting these rapids is gentle enough for everyone from 6 years of age to 60). Along the way you’ll see many trout in what are arguably the clearest river waters in the world. Visit www.alpinekayaks.co.nz
