Arethusa Pool on Mou Waho Island

Mou Waho Island is located in the middle of Lake Wanaka, a one hour cruise from the beach front in Wanaka. A short walk inland will take you to the beautiful Arethusa Pool, a small alpine lake located 100 metres above Lake Wanaka in a Japanese garden-like rock and forest setting. From here you will enjoy the outstanding views of the Minaret Peaks on the western shore of Lake Wanaka and south towards Whare Kea Lodge.

Milford Sound

A short ¾ hour flight from nearby Wanaka Airport is Milford Sound. Flying over Mt. Aspiring to the fiords of the West Coast is one of the most scenic flights you’ll ever experience. Once at Milford, a 2 hour leisurely boat cruise will take you down the Sound where you will see the sheer rock faces that rise 1200 metres or more on either side. Lush rain forests cling precariously to these cliffs, while seals, penguins, and the unique Fiordland Bottlenose dolphins frequent these waters. The return flight to Wanaka takes a more southerly route passing over Glenorchy at the tip of Lake Wakatipu and returns you to Whare Kea in time to enjoy a delicious late lunch.

Dart River

For views of the natural setting of the “Lord of the Rings” epics, take this full day trip up the remote Dart River and past the towering Mt. Earnslaw. The day begins with a ½ hour flight over the Harris Mountains to Glenorchy, at the tip of Lake Wakatipu. A 25 km or 1 ¼ hour jet boat ride will then take you up past the ancient forests of the World Heritage Area that is the Dart River. Returning down the river will be via inflatable kayaks (or Funyaks) takes approximately 2 ½ hours, stopping for lunch at the chasm where the Rock Burn and Dart Rivers join. A short bus trip will then take you back to Glenorchy where your aircraft will return you to Whare Kea in the late afternoon.
