Resort Skiing
Cardrona and Treble Cone ski resorts are two of New Zealand’s best. Cardrona resort is renowned for its dry natural snow and wide, open slopes and is located between Wanaka and Queenstown with a base elevation of 1670m (5600ft). Treble Cone, famed for its outstanding views, large ski area and the highest vertical drop on the South Island, is located in the Matukituki Valley just off the Mt. Aspiring Road beyond Whare Kea. For more information about these famed ski resorts, see www.cardrona.co.nz and www.treblecone.com.
For something different, why not try your hand (and legs) at Nordic skiing. Waiorau Snow Farm boasts 55km of prepared cross country ski trails and is located between Wanaka and Queenstown, a short 45 minute drive from Whare Kea. Please see www.snowfarmnz.com.

Mountaineering
Outstanding alpine mountaineering is on offer in the Mt. Aspiring National Park and Whare Kea is an ideal base from which to enjoy this activity. The nearby township of Wanaka is the home base for many of New Zealand’s UIAGM qualified mountain guides, famous for their guided ascents of some of the highest mountains in the world. These guides are available to lead guests to the summit of Mt. Aspiring, the ‘Matterhorn of the South’, teach you the thrills of ice or rock climbing or a more extensive general mountaineering course. For more information, please see www.adventure.co.nz or www.aspiringguides.com.
