The Location

The Lake Wanaka region enjoys four distinct seasons with warm dry summers and cold crisp clear winters. Average day time temperatures range from 20-30˚C (70-85˚F) in summer to 5-15˚C (40-60˚F) in winter - see www.metvuw.co.nz

Enjoy trout and salmon fishing during spring and summer or utilise our close connections with local helicopter operators to go heli-skiing in the Harris or Buchanan mountain ranges in winter. Please see our Activities page for the variety of activites on offer.

Whare Kea Lodge is located near the township of Wanaka in the Southern Lakes district of New Zealand and is perfectly located to offer easy access to the Mt. Aspiring, Fiordland, Mt. Cook and Westland National Parks and the vast rural landscape that lies between.

There are a variety of simple travel options available to reach Whare Kea Lodge:

By Air:

  • There are daily direct flights to Wanaka from Christchurch www.airnz.co.nz
  • Several daily direct flights to Queenstown from either Christchurch or Auckland.
  • Several direct flights each week to Queenstown from Sydney and Melbourne and Brisbane in winter.
  • Queenstown to Wanaka is only a 18 minute helicopter charter flight directly to Whare Kea’s front lawn. Whare Kea can assist with aircraft charter and helicopter bookings www.thlnz.co.nz www.aspiringhelicopters.co.nz

By car via the scenic route:

  • Whare Kea Lodge is just over an hour’s drive from Queenstown
  • Make a day of it and enjoy the panorama of New Zealand’s south island, driving from Christchurch which takes approximately five hours www.hertz.co.nz
  • If you desire, Whare Kea can arrange a limousine car service for you.
