MiNDFOOD Best Homecook of the Year

Whare Kea's new Sous Chef, Sarah Wadsworth, was delighted to be announced as the June 2013 monthly winner in the search for “MiNDFOOD Homecook of the Year." She was excited and really honoured to be invited as a finalist to the main judging event, in Auckland last month, as MiNDFOOD is one of her favourite magazines – as they do an amazing job with what they publish.
She had a lot of fun meeting the other finalists from all over the country, and was invited to cook her winning meal using a Silver Fern Farms product, and these were judged by MiNDFOOD's Editor-in-chief Michael McHugh and Food editor, Michelle McHugh, Silver Fern Farms General Manager of Marketing, Sharon Angus and Michael Meredith, owner and chef of Meredith's Restaurant in Auckland.
The recipe that won, and that they were judged from, was Southwestern Lamb (Chili). It is full of seasonal vegetables, some nice spice in the form of toasted cumin, and takes under an hour to cook (and tastes even better the next day)! This was a rendition of a family recipe that she grew up with in California, but modified to suit the NZ ingredients available.
Her initial apprehension about creating a winter dish to compete in a summer competition dissipated as many of the judges complimented her style – with Michael Meredith telling her that her dish tasted phenomenal - and she was awarded as the ultimate winner of the inaugural MiNDFOOD Best Homecook of the Year for 2014.
As part of her prize, Sarah will feature in MiNDFOOD magazine plus she will be the VIP guest at the MiNDFOOD and Silver Fern Farm dinner to be held in Auckland in April.
