Flights over Wanaka

Only when airborne can you fully take in the grandeur of the Wanaka region – the latticed rivers, the lakes and mountains with tumbling waterfalls cascading to the valleys below.

Plus, flying has opened new frontiers: heli-skiing, heli-canyoning, heli-kayaking, heli-biking, heli-hiking, heli-fishing and heli-jet boating take the sports to the next level, reaching terrain that is otherwise inaccessible.

A 45-minute scenic flight from Wanaka Airport, for example, takes you to Milford Sound, with a spectacular flight over Mount Aspiring, often referred to as the Matterhorn of the south. The route back to Whare Kea Lodge passes over Glenorchy at the tip of Lake Wakatipu.

Classic Flights WANAKA

A scenic flight in a vintage Tiger Moth gives a perspective like no other of some of the South Island’s most breathtaking countryside.

Pilot Peter Hendriks of Classic Flights, a well-known local identity, lands in one of the paddocks behind the lodge and kits you out in a flying ensemble of leather jacket, silk scarf and helmet. He then takes you on a 20-minute flight over Lake Wanaka, with Mount Aspiring National Park and the Southern Alps as the backdrop.

Other classic flights he offers include the Ultimate Barnstormer, a 30-minute aerobatic trip taking you dipping and soaring above the Matukituki Valley; and the Freedom of Romance Picnic - a two-hour flight-seeing excursion that includes a picnic by the lake.
