Wanaka has a wealth of tramping options that take you into the unrivalled alpine surrounds, with trips ranging from one to eight days. Many are around the three- to four-day mark and all are recommended during fair weather in the months of November to April.

The Whare Kea Chalet is surrounded by multiple walking, tramping and climbing experiences.  From multi-day routes to/from the chalet to the valley floor, helicopter landings in the mountains in which you can then tramp to the chalet, to an easy loop walk from the chalet. There is something for everyone, of all fitness levels.  All trips to the chalet are accompanied by an experienced safety guide, who will ensure you get the most of our your chalet adventure.  Please contact us for more details.

For a day trip from  Wanaka, the Skyline Route starts from the Roys Peak Track carpark, near Whare Kea Lodge on Mount Aspiring Road. The roughly 10-hour tramp climbs Roys Peak to the summit (1500 metres), with views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains, then crosses Mount Alpha and descends to Cardrona Road.

Another day trip is the Siberia Experience -a 4 hour unique New Zealand wilderness adventure in Mt Aspiring National Park. It combines a scenic plane flight, a bush and valley walk through the Siberia Valley and finishing with a thrilling jetboat trip back to Makarora.

Likewise, the Makarora Valley Track can be done in a day, covering grassy flats and a steep climb beside Stewart Falls. The many valleys leading from the Makarora River offer more challenging tramps of several days.

For shorter walks in the region, please visit our walking page or the Lake Wanaka Tourism website.
